Caiques are fearless, friendly and playful. These little clowns are from South America. Caiques love to explore their surroundings and almost always find something to get into. Close supervision is required during playtime because of the amount of trouble these feathered little clowns can cause. They often prefer to walk, jump, climb, or hop instead of flying to get around. They are excellent climbers, with very strong feet and legs.
Pros: Little bird huge personality, very fun to watch. Cons: Can be aggressive if not handled often. Caiques can be somewhat unpredictable at times. If they are scared of an person they can exhibit a lot of fear aggression. They also may act aggressively to strangers. Caique aggression may result in "Caique stalking" where the Caiques chases after the person or thing in its disfavor. The only way to stop this behavior is for the person being stalked to stand their ground and show no fear, the Caique will probably then loose interest and find something else to do.
Types of Caiques Black Headed Parrot Blacked Headed Parrots are cheaper than the white bellied parrots and have been proven easier to find. White Bellied Parrot White bellied parrots have the same sweet temperament as Black Headed Parrots yet they cost more due the the they are slightly rarer .
Housing and Care Information Caiques are very active by nature and prefer to climb rather than fly. It is good to provide at least 3 perches and a little ladder to give them something to climb about on. A large cage that allows free movement is necessary to house these birds a minimum cage size of 24x24x26 but remember the large the better. See Housing your bird for more cage info. Nutritional Needs Like all birds Caiques need a well balanced diet. Feeding your birds simply seeds isn't the healthiest option. They need a variety of food such as cereal, pellets, fruits and vegetables. Vegetables such as lettuce and broccoli are not only healthy for your Caiques but can be a fun toy! Caiques hull their seeds so they must not be fed grit. Everyday food and water containers should be emptied and cleaned to prevent bacteria growth.
