How to Buy a Bird Remember always to research before buying a bird. You can visit our Parrot Guide for useful information on different types of parrot species. When choosing your bird always look for the healthiest most active bird in the bunch. Buying a sick bird not only is dangerous to your other birds but can cost a fortune in veterinary bills. Several things to look for in a healthy bird are, good plumage (feathers), active nature, eating and drinking normally and observe to see if the bird is breathing normally. Ways to buy a bird -Rehabilitating a previously owned bird. Obtaining a bird through and adoption program or receiving it from somebody who "cant handle" the bird is very rewarding. The bird may have social problems or problems such as feather picking but with love and care you can give the bird a second chance. I strongly believe you should consider this a first choice when buying a new bird. -Buy a bird from a Breeder. There are many fantastic breeders out there who hand raise baby parrots. These parrots will almost always be completely comfortable around humans and most bond readily. Not only is the bird handfed and hand tame but most breeders can help you decide a bird that is right for your lifestyle. - Buying a bird from a Pet store. Many pet stores such as Petco or Petsmart sell birds. Some are hand tame and some are not. Most of my Parakeets come from pet stores and though they were not hand tamed with proper training they bonded to me and now are part of the family. See our Taming your Bird Section. Conditions can vary in pet stores. Some are downright deplorable and others can seem like a bird paradise. Although you may want to "save" a bird from horrible conditions in a pet store this may not be a good decision. If the living conditions aren't optimal the birds can easily carry diseases and have health problems. Instead of buying a bird from these store you should contact the Humane Society immediately. |
