Lineolated Parakeet Information

Lineolated Parakeets (also known as Barred Parakeets) are small birds from the mountains of South America. They are recently becoming popular among bird owners due to their gentle disposition and their soft voices. Over the last few years this small bird had some very beautiful color mutations.

Lineolated Parakeets ,or "linnies" for short, are about the size or a budgie yet have the body build of a lovebird. Lineolated Parakeets are known for being much calmer than budgies and much quieter than lovebirds. Due to their small size and low voices they are great apartment birds.

Like bigger parrots Lineolated Parakeets can hold their food and toys with their feet. They would much rather climb to a perch than fly to it. Like budgies Linnies love toys so it is best to have at least four toys and switch two out a week to prevent boredom.

One fact remains undisputed among Lineolated Parakeet owners. They love to bath. They bath with a passion and can easily loose its self in the moment. They prefer a light misting over a bird bath. Many Lineolated Parakeets do go through a brief "terrible twos" where they may become slightly nippy and aggressive but this hormonal behavior soon passes.

Housing and Care Information

Linnies prefer to climb rather than fly. It is good to provide at least 3 perches and a little ladder to give them something to climb about on. A large cage that allows free movement is necessary to house these birds a minimum cage size of 18x16x18 but remember the large the better. See Housing your bird for more cage info.

Nutritional Needs

Lineolated Parakeets can eat a mix of cockatiel and budgie food. Like all birds Lineolated Parakeet need a well balanced diet. Feeding your birds simply seeds isn't the healthiest option. They need a variety of food, vegetables such as lettuce and broccoli are not only healthy for your Lineolated Parakeet but can be a fun toy!  Everyday food and water containers should be emptied and cleaned to prevent bacteria growth.
